Vijaydurg, the oldest fort on the Sindhudurg coast, was constructed during the regime of Raja Bhoja II of the Shilahar dynasty and was restructured by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. Earlier, the fort encompassed an area of 5 acres and was surrounded by sea on all four sides.
History
Vijaydurg Fort in the Sindhudurg district of Maharashtra, India has a history of more than 800 years. It was built between 1193 and 1205 during the reign of Raja Bhoja II of the Shilahar dynasty, and was originally called "Gheria" because it's located near the village of "Girye". In 1653, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj captured the fort from Adil Shah of Bijapur and renamed it "Vijay Durg" in honor of the Hindu solar year's name "Vijay" (Victory).
