Velas Beach is a coastal village in the Ratnagiri district of Maharashtra, India, known for its white sand beaches, coconut trees, and azure waters. The village is also home to many olive ridley sea turtles, the second smallest sea turtles in the world, that hatch in the area. The village hosts the Velas Turtle Festival, or Velas Kasav Mohotsav, every year to celebrate the breeding process of the turtles and their migration to the Arabian Sea. The best time to visit and witness Turtle Festival is from March to April.
How to reach
The most convenient way to reach Velas from Mumbai is by road. Drive or hire a taxi from Mumbai to Velas. The journey takes approximately 5 to 6 hours, covering a distance of around 220 kilometers. Another option is the nearest railway station at Chiplun. There are two trains between Pune and Chiplun running on Sundays and Wednesdays. The train takes around 6 hours to reach Chiplun. You can book a Chiplun to Velas taxi and reach there within 3 hours.
