History
Manikgad is a mountain fortress and temple in Gherakilla Manikgad, India. Located among rolling hills, the temple is a popular hiking spot. Manikgad was built to oversee the trade route from Maval (Pune) to coastal ports. The fort is situated near Vashivali (Rasayani MIDC), which is 27 km from Panvel. The fort was built by Sarkhel Kanhoji Angre, to whom it was ceded in 1718 by Peshavas.
How to reach
Panvel is the nearest railway station to Mumbai. From here you can walk to the Panvel ST station to get a direct bus to Vashivali ( Panvel – Vashivali buses are frequent ). Or you can walk to the Panvel Rickshaw EECO stand to get a shared rickshaw (Rs 50 per head). From the EECO stand, there are two options.
Route1: Take EECO to Mohopada, Rasayani ( via Dandphata ) > Take a small auto to Vashivali
Route2: Take EECO to Mohopada Rasayani ( via Savla ) get down at Parade Corner > Take a small auto to Vashivali
